From a design standpoint, the Performa wasn’t bad. Apple intended it look something like the competitor’s models. The problem for the x200 was what Apple put under the hood. It couldn’t match the competition for speed. At a time when computers were still slow by modern standards, this Performa couldn’t keep up. The other problem was the way Apple marketed this computer. In their attempt to take on the other guys head-to-head, they only demonstrated a slower more difficult machine. Salespeople couldn’t sell it. Buyers could use it. They were often returned. The damage to Apple was a reputation they would live with for years; Macs are slow.
