How To Say No To Low Self Esteem

Feeling low from time to time is something that happens to all of us but if you consistently feel badly towards yourself, it might be time to make a change. Low self esteem affects a huge amount of people around the world and while feelings of low self worth and lack of confidence are likely unjustified, the condition can really take over your life, if you let it. If you’re fed up of lacking confidence and self belief, then it is up to you to make the changes in your life in order to feel more happy. Once you take the first step, the rest might come a little easier than you had at first thought.

We all have an inner critic; it’s just that some people are better at putting a lid on it than others. If you find your achievements dampened by the thought that you could have done better or that it was all down to good luck, it could be time to silence your inner critic once and for all. Although it’s good to strive to be better, criticizing everything that you do can massively affect your happiness and your feelings of self worth. The next time you hear yourself thinking something negative about yourself, stop yourself and say “no”. Actively disagreeing with what feels natural might be strange at first but over time, you will learn to reject the harmful thoughts culminating in your head.

When we take part in an activity that we particularly enjoy, we can’t help but feel more confident about it. Feeling enthused and motivated about a project will naturally lead to a rise in your feelings of self worth, even if you’re not aware of it. The more active a part you take in a project, the weaker your inner critic will become. Take charge and say no to negativity.

  1. Appreciate Yourself

Sometimes, there is nothing better than taking a little time in which to appreciate yourself. Telling ourselves the things we admire about ourselves is something that too few of us do and yet, appreciation is one of the best way to boost levels of self esteem. Getting into the habit of writing down three things you like about yourself every day is an effective way of helping you to remember exactly what you have to be proud of. If you need a boost on the go, you can try recording short affirmations on your phone and listening to them in times of need. The sound of your own voice and the positive message might just do more good than you would think.

  1. Reject Perfection

Not only is perfection unattainable, it can also be detrimental to your well being and striving for something that simply doesn’t exist might make you feel all the worse for it. One of the biggest culprits for low self esteem is a belief in perfectionism and when you fail to meet your goal, you can end up feeling even lower than before. When you take part in an activity, try aiming for good enough rather than perfect. It might take some getting used to but accepting that a good job will still get you far can change the way you think entirely.
