Let’s face it, people like to talk and especially talk about themselves. One of the best things you can do to help people like you is to not only listen to what they have to say, but really care and take it to heart. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should be a doormat who always listens, but knowing when to listen and when to talk, is huge in helping your social skills.

2. Don’t Keep Score

In relationships, helping each other out in a variety of different ways is par for the course. However, one of the worst things you can do is constantly keep score of things you do for others and what they do for you. You shouldn’t only do things for others because you want something in return, but you should do it because you really and truly want to help them and see them happy.

3. Be Positive

If you are constantly negative, nobody wants to be around you and you drag everything down. Now, being positive doesn’t mean pretending things are okay when they’re not, but is about instilling a mindset to try and see the positives, even if they are small. Positive thinking and acting will not only help people like you more, but being and thinking positively also can help with stress, worrying and other things that we all go through on a day to day basis.

4. Don’t Be a “One-Upper”

Oftentimes people who do this don’t even realize it, but it really is one of the most annoying things out there. A one upper is anyone who (while someone else is telling a story or something) always tries to say or do something more impressive than everyone else. Of course, there is nothing wrong with telling these stories every now and then if it makes sense in the conversation, but keep them to a minimum. If you are constantly one-upping other people it will make them less likely to include you in conversations and won’t help them like you.
