eMate 300 (1997)
Think of the eMate like the first netbook. Students were Apple’s target market. It ran the Newton OS, which means its capabilities were behind other more capable laptops in ’97. Sadly, to keep the price down, it was also less capable than the Newton. At the time, it wast the cheapest laptop Apple ever sold, $799. On one charge the 300 lasted 28 hours. The screen was a black and white touchscreen, you could engage with the included stylus. The design was otherwise hideous, even for its day. Purchase of the eMate was difficult, only available through educational channels. Most people never saw one. It was scrapped by Jobs along with the Newton line when he took over.
