The big stone holding us back on artificial intelligence is the way our computers work. We’ve designed them the same way for a long time, just with better parts. Most business and home systems have to run faster in the future. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are system architectures which allow systems to run fast, like human brain fast. This means systems that can start learning information, getting smarter, the way IBM’s Watson learns but more advanced. Unless you work in IT or are upgrading your system for home or work, you likely won’t know this is happening until it does. We won’t see this en masse by the end of 2017, but some systems will start working this way.
